What Is a Macerator Toilet and How Does It Work?

Short answer: A macerator toilet uses an electrically powered unit to break down toilet waste and pump it through small-bore discharge pipework to a suitable foul drain. It can help where a conventional gravity connection is impractical, but it still needs the correct model, pipe route, power supply, ventilation and maintenance access.

The basic operating cycle

When the connected appliance discharges, a pressure or level control starts the motor. The impeller and cutting mechanism process the waste, then the pump moves it along the discharge pipe. The unit stops when the chamber has emptied to its designed level.

Different products handle different combinations of WC, basin, shower, bath, kitchen or utility waste. A product name alone does not prove suitability.

Where it can be useful
