The basic operating cycle
When the connected appliance discharges, a pressure or level control starts the motor. The impeller and cutting mechanism process the waste, then the pump moves it along the discharge pipe. The unit stops when the chamber has emptied to its designed level.
Different products handle different combinations of WC, basin, shower, bath, kitchen or utility waste. A product name alone does not prove suitability.

Where it can be useful
Macerators are commonly considered for en-suites, cloakrooms, basements, lofts and conversions where a full-size gravity soil pipe is difficult to route. They are an engineering option, not permission to ignore drainage rules or manufacturer limits.
- Check whether gravity drainage is feasible first
- Do not conceal the appliance without service access
- Account for operating noise and likely usage
- Keep installation documents with the property
What an installer needs to know
Provide the room use, fixtures, vertical rise, horizontal run, bends, pipe size, final drain connection and available electrical supply. These facts determine whether the proposal is workable.
