Short answer: Use only a cleaning or descaling product and procedure compatible with the exact appliance. Follow its manufacturer instructions for quantity, contact time, isolation and flushing. Never mix products, and do not treat aggressive drain cleaner as a substitute for macerator descaler.

Cleaning and descaling are different

Surface cleaning deals with the WC and visible areas. Descaling targets mineral build-up inside the appliance and pipework. The appropriate product and interval depend on water hardness, usage and model instructions.

A safe maintenance record

Record the product, date and any change in noise, run time, odour or discharge. This gives a repairer useful history without encouraging unnecessary servicing claims.

What maintenance cannot fix

A seized mechanism, damaged seal, electrical fault, cracked casing or foreign object needs diagnosis. Do not use chemicals to mask a persistent failure.
